I would assume that Kaldus will have a homelessness problem. I am one of those that believes in a housing first initiative. Any other problems the person will suffer will be able to be addressed when they have sufficient housing. With that in mind, there will likely be independent shelters from charities which would have signed up with NCS, and those options will be made available to the family in need. However, many charities seems to focus on families, so what happens if it is just a single person? The space will be 3.5m×3.5m which will be enough for a single person. Due to the small space, no pets will be allowed.
The SRO will have what would be considered as the basic essentials without it being too big. The goal is to optimize every SRO to allow for access to housing while waiting for other rental assistance programs. The renter must have applied for other assistance programs as the SRO is intended to be temporary until better housing options are available. When entering the unit, the renter will be introduced to the HAI panel. This panel will control all aspects of the room including lighting and temperature. This will also be the intercom system for visitors that request entry through the public foyer. Next to the HAI panel will be a lavatory (sink+toilet). The sink will have a faucet designed to allow a person to fill up a 1 liter bottle of water to consume. Next to the lavatory wall will be a dormitory refrigerator and freezer. This is intended to provide the absolute basics. On top of the refrigerator will be a 1kw microwave. There will be no access to a stove. Next to the refrigerator will be a sleeper sofa. This will be a sofa during waking hours, and folds out into a bed during sleeping hours. While not the most comfortable option, it will work. Across from the sleeper sofa will be a wall mounted TV that will comply with NSC standards. Below the TV will be a shelf with an RJ45-WAN port for plugging in a router. The renter is responsible for providing a router. Next to the TV in the corner will be a corner desk which will make for a good home for a notebook PC. Across from the desk will be an end table which sits on the other side of the couch. This end table can support a lamp, or a printer. In between the desk, and end table will be the exterior wall, and a window for light and access to fresh air.
In the center of the room in the ceiling will be an overhead lamp. This is controlled by the HAI. The floor against the window will have a heating/AC vent. This will allow for cooling or heating the room. The window will be a one way glass for maximum privacy. There is a no pet policy, and a non-smoking policy. Those smoking will be required to go outside when they smoke. Anyone caught having pets or smoking in the unit will face eviction and a SRO ban for 3 years. There will be a shower room where the renter will be able to shower, and take care of hygiene needs. The shower stall will be just a basic shower stall, and the renter is required to use their own soap, and wash cloths.
Rent is 30% of income, and includes all utilities. The renter can not have anyone else living with them. If they know someone that needs a place to live, that person must acquire their own SRO room. Mail services will be available to receive notices or other mail. A visitor will contact the renter through the public foyer. When the visitor selects their unit, the HAI will make a sound, and alert the renter that there is someone to visit. The renter will have 2 camera views. One will be in front of the visitor so the renter can see the face. There will also be a ceiling view of the public foyer to allow the renter to make a just decision in allowing access. The renter must know the visitor unless it is a shipper, or food delivery.
There will be a number of SRO buildings created to reduce the homelessness problem. By offering SRO rooms to those that have no place to live, they will then have a place to live. With that said, there will likely need to be a number of SROs produced to give access to everyone that needs it. If the homeless person finds this as an option, they can choose to live in another county to get access to an available room. The person is required to have his own way of getting there. If the county is neighboring, then public transit will be an option when using the busways.
